The 12 one-thousand-year-old churches around Lake Thun are widely renowned and are shrouded in legend.
The one-thousand-year-old Lake Thun churches are widely renowned. Elogius Kiburger, the minister in Einigen, mentions them in his Stretlinger Chronicle of 1453.
Rudolf II. († 937), King of Burgundy and Lombardy, along with his wife Berta are said to have often been guests of the Lords of Strättligen at the Golden Estate in Spiez. The king kept on having the same dream and so he asked the minister at Einigen to interpret it for him. The minister told him that he had been commanded by heaven to build 12 churches around Einigen and so he did, in: Aeschi, Amsoldingen, Frutigen, Hilterfingen, Leissigen, Scherzligen, Sigriswil, Spiez, Thierachern, Thun, Uttigen and Wimmis.
