Chästeilet’ in the Justis Valley

On Friday before the Swiss Day of Thanks and Prayer the farmers whose cows have spent the summer in the Justis Valley get together to share out the cheese in proportion to the milk yield of their cows.  Around midday the cheese is brought out of the stores and stacked in line, with the older and younger cheeses evenly mixed.  The farmers then draw lots for the stacks of cheese and they must decide amongst themselves how much each farmer is due.

Even before this traditional ritual the joyful party begins and continues during the sharing out of the cheese.  The end of the alpine summer is celebrated simply; the  yodel songs come from the visitors and cheeses makers, who may spontaeneously start to sing.  Here and there the delightful sounds of the Schwyzerorgeli’ (Swiss accordion) are heard when a visitor decides to play.

After the Chästeilet’, the cows are brought back down to the valley in a well loved procession.  The cows with the greatest yield of milk wear wreaths.

Festival to mark the end of the shooting season

The ‚Ausschiesset‘ can be traced back to the 16th century. Originally it marked the end of the shooting club’s shooting practices in the autumn. With the festival the season was finished and processions were held. In addition a meal was eaten together and in later times, a ball was organised.
Hand in hand with the Ausschiesset is the Fulehung. The Fulehung only appeared at this event dressed as a jester with a devil‘s mask. According to what we know today, the Fulehung was the court jester Karl des Kühnen, who is said to have been captured by the Thun soldiers in the Battle of Murten in 1476.
