The earliest mentioned (around 500ad) of all the 1000 year old churches on Lake Thun, Scherzligen Church stands on a historically significant ‘hot spot’ (place of strength and mystical power). About two thirds of the inside of the church is covered with paintings and wall-hangings from the 13th to 16th century considered to be of national significance. The Romanesque nave from the 10th century, the Gothic choir stalls from 1380 and the Carolingian tower from the 9th century have been preserved.
