Sonata, Op. 96

Poco Allegretto

Op. 96 is the last sonata that L. van Beethoven composed for this combination of piano and violin. It is a late work, written in the bright key of G major; it takes us from the ethereal world of the first movement, through a deeply introspective second movement, to a dance-like scherzo, and concludes with variations on a folk song that was well-known at the time. The opening of the first movement could be a birdcall, to which a response is heard several times.

The name “Spring Sonata” was not given to the famous work, Op. 24, until later, but it aptly describes the character of the piece.

Bird calls, ethereal elements, spring-like qualities, and the return of the sun are interwoven in this music and in this program.
