Damian Budd, Host, Seehotel Bönigen recommends:
Starting in Bönigen, the route runs alongside Lake Thun before turning off into the Simmental valley. At Boltigen, the 37-kilometre road over the Jaun Pass links the Simmental valley (Bernese Oberland) with the Gruyère region in canton Fribourg. The road becomes winding here - the Jaun Pass is an exceptionally lovely area with stunning mountain scenery that features typically Swiss contrasts. You will hear Bernese dialect spoken in the Simmental, whereas in Jaun (Gruyère region) the vernacular sounds totally different. One village on from Jaun, the native language changes to French: the Jaun Pass straddles the language border between German- and French-speaking Switzerland. The ride continues through the Gruyère region, which is famous for its chocolate and cheese. And the next highlight is just around the corner; the Col des Mosses Pass stuns with scenic splendour and leads you into a fertile plateau with vineyards. From here, take the 33-kilometre Col du Pillon pass road back to Saanen in the Bernese Oberland. Plan a stop in Gstaad and take a leisurely stroll along the traffic-free promenade before returning to the Interlaken holiday region via the Simmental.
Highlights:
- Riding over the Jaun Pass, Col des Mosses and Col du Pillon
- Picture-pretty town of Gruyères
- Gstaad (traffic-free promenade)
- Stopping for refreshments on the Jaun Pass
