The starting point of the winter hike is easy to reach. From the modern Grindelwald Terminal, which is very well connected to the public transport network, the gondola takes you up to Männlichen. Those coming from Wengen take the cable car. The journey up is an experience itself, as with every meter climbed, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau come closer.
The hike starts at the mountain station. Right at the beginning, a short detour to the summit of Männlichen is worthwhile. The so-called Royal Walk is particularly fascinating for children. It leads from the Männlichen cable car station to the summit and invites you to discover all sorts of royal features. But now to the winter hike to Kleine Scheidegg: The route gently descends over wide, prepared paths. Over almost six kilometers, it takes two to two and a half hours to reach Kleine Scheidegg. The altitude difference remains moderate: about 310 meters uphill and 480 meters downhill. Particularly impressive is the view of the north face of the Eiger, which shows itself in full force repeatedly along the way. The view towards Grindelwald is also impressive. Shortly before the destination, Kleine Scheidegg, a roughly 30-minute final ascent awaits the hikers. Those who want to stop at one of the various inns on the way or at the end of the tour have several options.
At the destination at 2061 m above sea level awaits the Wengernalpbahn. It takes hikers either to Lauterbrunnen or back to Grindelwald. Those with energy left can extend the hike, for example by adding the winter hiking trail to Eigergletscher station. Even though the path does not present particular difficulties and is very well marked, winter hikers should be properly equipped. Sturdy, high, grippy and waterproof boots with good tread, warm clothing and sun protection are a must. Depending on snow conditions, the route can also be significantly more difficult and strenuous.
