The Collegium Musicum Helveticum chamber orchestra consists of music students and accomplished amateur musicians and was founded in 2022 by Thomas Tschudin.
Following the success of its last Baroque Christmas concert, “Christmas Gems,” the ensemble is once again presenting three concerts in the churches of Gsteig near Wilderswil, Wohlen near Bern, and Kriens near Lucerne.
As the name suggests, the Collegium Musicum Helveticum also strives to perform works by Swiss composers. This year’s concert, “Graceful Classics,” will feature music by two 18th-century Swiss composers: On the one hand, a sinfonia by Gaspard Fritz of Geneva, who was a prominent violinist and composer whose style spanned the late Baroque, early Classical, and Sturm und Drang periods. His contemporary Joseph Stalder was also a fairly well-known composer at the time—though forgotten today—born in Lucerne in 1725. Unlike Fritz, who worked in his hometown throughout his life, Stalder spent most of his life traveling throughout Europe until he finally returned to Lucerne shortly before his death to take up a position as an organist there. We will hear an oboe trio by Stalder that has likely never been performed in modern times.
Alongside these “Swiss gems,” the program features a melodious and pleasing Sinfonia concertante by Carl Friedrich Abel. The soloists are Karin Schweizer on oboe, Tabea Schwab on cello, and Thomas Tschudin on violin.
As the grand finale, the orchestra will perform a lively and graceful symphony by the famous composer Joseph Haydn.
The 17 musicians of the Collegium Musicum Helveticum look forward to welcoming you to the concert!
