Experience a snowshoe trail with a wonderful view of the mighty peaks of the Bernese Alps. The Lauterbrunnen valley with its steep rock walls and many hundreds of waterfalls transports you into a magical landscape not only in winter.

From the Schilthornbahn station in Mürren, the winter hiking trail, which was opened in the 2022 / 2023 winter season, leads upward towards Gimmelen to the start of the actual snowshoe trail at the small hamlet of Obri Brich. The trail ascends gently through a mystically snow-covered forest to the junction at the upper Gimmelwalder Allmi.

Now you have the choice: Either take a loop valleywards across snowy meadows and through the forest, past small barns and alpine huts to the mountain restaurant Gimmelen – or choose the more direct route through the small woodland to the restaurant.

Alternatively, you can hike downhill through the forest to the Gimmelwalder Allmi, which offers a wonderful view of Gimmelwald and the rear Lauterbrunnen valley. From there, the path leads down steadily to Gimmelwald.

For the return from the mountain restaurant Gimmelen, follow the path back to the junction at the upper Gimmelwalder Allmi, from where you can continue hiking to Gimmelwald. The small, picturesque village, originally a Walser settlement, with its traditional chalets and breathtaking mountain panorama is worth a visit. Take the cable car back down to Stechelberg. Alternatively, follow the prepared winter hiking trail from the mountain restaurant Gimmelen back to Mürren.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

A small detour at the valley station in Stechelberg is worth it! Behind the station, a small bridge crosses the Weisse Lütschine. Turn left, follow the hiking trail and admire the impressive Mürrenbachfall.
