The impressive road bike route is the perfect trip for athletes looking for a challenge combined with panorama and enjoyment.

The start of the route is at the train station in Brienz. After leaving the beautiful village of Brienz behind, you approach the challenging ascent along Lake Brienz. This first section is the only flat part of the route. Afterwards, the route is characterized by a steady incline. It goes high up to the Axalp, which is 1,535 m above sea level. The paved road winds through forest sections and green pastures, where traditional alpine huts and beautiful chalets decorate the landscape. While you enjoy the picturesque area, effort, sweat, and sore calves fade into the background. Our tip: Extend your ride to the mountain restaurant Hilten (1,706 m above sea level), which towers above the village center on a hill. From up here you have a unique view of the surrounding mountains and Lake Brienz. Refresh yourself with a delicious rösti and a refreshing drink before returning on the same route.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

The route is an insider tip; few people think of riding up to the Axalp because the Brünig, Grimsel, Susten, and especially the Grosse Scheidegg are in close proximity and much more popular. However, both the ascent and the nature on the Axalp are actually much more magnificent.
