The trip to the Schynige Platte is worth it not only because of the ascent of the Oberberghorn or the photogenic view of the famous trio Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The famous alpine garden alone is worth a visit!

This rewarding circular hike begins at the mountain station of the cogwheel train on the Schynige Platte. It first passes the inviting sun terrace of the mountain hotel and continues with a gentle ascent up to the Tuba. Alpine choughs greet arriving hikers and benches invite you to rest. With an impressive view down to Interlaken and Lake Brienz, the hiking path leads from the Tuba along the ridge towards the Oberberghorn. Those who are not free of vertigo turn off into the flank and hike below the ridge until the convergence of the two hiking trails at the foot of the Oberberghorn.

Here begins the exciting detour to this rewarding viewpoint summit! The ascent is rated T3. A well-secured path leads over wooden stairs and footbridges past an accessible rock hole to the widely visible Oberberghorn. At the top, the trio is within reach, and far below the Lake Brienz glistens.

Back down, the hiking trail follows along the rock and further over scree, which demands some attention when placing your feet. At the rock walls, the echo of calling marmots resounds as they frolic between the stones on the meadows. Just before the turning point “Grätli,” well-secured stairs lead down a rock step. On the return, the view of the surrounding peaks of the Bernese Oberland presents itself from a different, fascinating perspective. Almost daily, alphorn players perform on the Schynige Platte, giving the magnificent view a fitting sound backdrop. Before returning home, a walk through the alpine garden located right by the train station is definitely worthwhile. Every week, different of the over 650 alpine plants bloom again and again. Entrance to the remarkable alpine garden is even included in the train ticket.
