I Wonder as I Wander
Arianna Savall soprano and baroque harp
Petter Udland Johansen tenor and mandolin
Sonos Quartet
Jiri Nemecek, violin
Stefanie Bischof, violin
Martin Bischof, viola
Andrea Bischof, violoncello
The remarkable program is characterized by a harmonious combination of folkloristic and classical music traditions from different European cultures, with a special focus on Spain and Central Europe. Arianna Savall, a singer and harpist who has been mediating between early music and contemporary projects for years, and Petter Udland Johansen, tenor, multi-instrumentalist and arranger, open up new sound spaces with the SONOS Quartet. Johansen's specially created arrangements give well-known songs by Purcell, Dvořák, Strauss or Mahler a fresh touch without losing their original essence.
The focus is on the motif of wandering: Dvořák's "Songs my mother taught me" or Mahler's "Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen" tell of origin and departure; Strauss' "Morgen" of quiet arrival, Catalan folk songs such as "Rossinyol que vas a França" of being on the move between countries. Berio's "I wonder as I wander" summarizes all these movements as a poetic leitmotif. The result is a musical journey through times, styles and landscapes, carried by the special instrumentation of voice, harp, mandolin and string quartet.
