Sea of flowers at the foot of the Schwalmere: Saxeten – Blattisegg – Ramsermatte

The wide basin at the foot of the Schwalmere opens towards the northeast with a magnificent view of Lake Brienz. Time here passes slowly. The valley is primarily used for agriculture. The man-made and cared-for cultural areas blend attractively into the wild mountain landscape.

From the post bus stop at the old schoolhouse, you walk up through the village and climb steeply over meadowland to the Ankere forest. On a less steep forest path, you reach the Blattisegg in numerous switchbacks, where you enjoy a beautiful view of Lake Brienz and the Augstmatthorn.

A nearly level narrow path leads downstream to the hut of Ausserberg. From here, the official hiking trail leads back through the forest down to the village—actually a bit early. Therefore, you leave the path to the left and continue downstream on the wide gravel road. Passing the hut of Alp Fahl, you go, always gently downhill, to the small hut on the Ramsermatte. Here you reach a marked hiking trail again, descend steeply to Holderboden, and return to Saxeten along the little road. But beforehand, it's worth taking a closer look at the Ramsermatte. The mountain meadow nestles wonderfully harmoniously into the slope and is a true flower paradise in early summer.

This unique idyll was awarded the "Cultural Landscape Prize" of the Oberland East region in 2012. Part of the extensive meadows is mowed, the larger part is grazed. In between there are wetlands and dry habitats. The variety of biotopes favors a great biodiversity. This can be seen, among other things, by the many butterflies one meets on the Ramsermatte.

Every year, particularly beautiful and valuable cultural landscapes are awarded the "Cultural Landscape Prize" in the Oberland East region. Through support and image promotion from tourism, the award is intended as a small incentive for farmers to continue sustainable management and thus contributes to preserving our beautiful nature.
